Our specialist practitioners provide world-class medical care in surgery, internal medicine, oncology, neurology, and emergency and critical care, and will talk you through a range of treatment options for your pet.

Your ARH specialist will also work closely with your regular veterinarian to ensure a coordinated approach to your pet’s care. Open Monday to Friday from 8 am to 6 pm, you will need a referral from your veterinarian to see a specialist.

Our specialists have undertaken years of advanced training in veterinary medicine. After graduating as veterinarians they have completed internship and residency programs. They have sat and passed rigorous examinations that subsequently allow them to be registered in Australia as a specialist. Veterinary specialists are recognized by their peers as having the highest level of skills and knowledge within their field of veterinary medicine.

ARH offers a comprehensive range of surgical solutions for dogs and cats including orthopaedic, soft tissue, trauma, reconstructive and neurological surgery. Led by our specialist surgeons, we take a considered approach to surgery and will provide a thorough plan to help ensure the best result for your pet.

Common surgical procedures performed at ARH include stifle (knee) stabilisation procedures for cruciate ligament insufficiency, fracture repair, limb deformity correction, arthroscopy, abdominal and thoracic surgery, reconstructive surgery, hemilaminectomy and ventral slot procedures for intervertebral disc disease and spinal stabilisation for vertebral fracture/luxation.

We are fully equipped with the most up to date surgical equipment and implants including:

  • Standard and locking, titanium and stainless-steel plates for fracture repair
  • Minimally invasive (keyhole) surgical equipment for arthroscopy, laparoscopy and thoracoscopy
  • External fixation implants for limb deformity correction and fracture repair
  • Ureteral stents and bypass implants for ureteral obstruction
  • Bipolar vessel-sealing technology for ligation
  • Stapling devices for organ removal

In-house access to high-field MRI, CT, digital radiography, fluoroscopy and ultrasound provide the most advanced diagnostic imaging options available in Queensland.

Our specialist surgeons are assisted by a highly qualified support team. The integration of surgery with internal medicine, oncology, neurology, diagnostic imaging and emergency and critical care ensures a seamless approach to your pet’s care. Exemplary postoperative pain relief and care for surgical patients is provided by our 24 hour hospital and intensive care unit.

Our internal medicine specialists are qualified in both canine and feline internal medicine. They treat a broad range of cases such as gastrointestinal disease (including liver, pancreas and bowel disease); cardiac and respiratory disease; endocrine problems (such as diabetes and thyroid disease); kidney and liver; immune system; and joint disease.

The internal medicine team at ARH Brisbane consists of Dr Elizabeth Dill-Macky, Dr Emily Cook and Dr Gemma Birnie.

The training and experience of our internal medicine specialists enables them to work with your local veterinarian to provide the highest standard of care for your pet. Our specialists receive referrals for patients that are critically ill as well as those with chronic or ongoing problems.

They are able to use their expertise combined with diagnostic tools, including endoscopy, ultrasound, CT and MRI, to investigate the cause of a pet’s illness and to offer the best possible advice on treatment options.

Our surgical oncology specialist provide a truly comprehensive veterinary cancer treatment service.

Upon seeing one of our oncologists further tests may be recommended for your pet and can include advanced diagnostic imaging such as radiology, ultrasound, CT or MRI.

Our oncologists will discuss all available treatment options and together you will decide the best course of treatment for you and your family. Oncology treatment is supported by our ARH specialists in medicine and intensive care to allow the very best outcome possible.

Our Neurology team assesses, diagnoses and treats diseases involving the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles.

Common diseases include:

  • Seizures (epilepsy)
  • Brain tumours
  • Meningitis
  • Vestibular (balance) disorders
  • Tremors and movement disorders
  • COMS and syringomyelia
  • Spinal cord problems e.g. intervertebral disc disease, Wobbler syndrome, back pain, paralysis
  • Muscle wastage and diseases including myositis and myasthaenia gravis
  • Our specialist equipment includes high field MRI (1.5T), CT, electrodiagnostics and BAER testing.

ARH Brisbane’s diagnostic imaging suite is the most advanced in Queensland. This enables our specialists to obtain the highest quality images required for diagnosis, treatment planning and prognosis of your pet’s condition.

Onsite, ARH Brisbane’s imaging suite consists of:

  • 1.5T MRI
  • 64-slice helical CT
  • DR Digital Radiography
  • Ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Images are interpreted by highly skilled clinicians and supported by specialist radiologists within the ARH group.

Our ARH nurses are qualified, highly skilled, and compassionate people who will go above and beyond in caring for your pet. We have dedicated nurses in surgery, oncology, internal medicine, intensive care and emergency and critical care.

ARH encompasses a specialist referral service and emergency hospital in one business which allows our nurses to provide seamless continuity of care to your pet. Whatever time of the day your pet is being treated, our nurses will strive to provide a comfortable and anxiety-free stay for your much-loved animal.

Our customer care team are the welcoming face of our organisation and will support you during your time at our hospital.

Our customer care team members are highly trained and compassionate people and can assist with making and changing appointments, organising visits with your pet, providing information on hospital stays and connecting you with our specialists.

They are also the resident experts in payment options, such as VetPay, and can process your insurance claims if desired.

At ARH we have a dedicated intensive care unit (ICU) which is open 24 hours a day all year round.

Our ICU team is highly trained to monitor and treat the most critically ill patients. They have access to state of the art equipment including invasive and non-invasive blood pressure monitoring, mechanical ventilator support and oxygen therapy, as well as the most up to date in-house blood testing machines for haematology, biochemistry, coagulation and blood-gas analysis.

Our team provides constant, close monitoring of all animals requiring ICU support and specialises in providing pain management, intravenous fluid resuscitation, blood transfusions, oxygen support and nutrition to patients. Their dedicated care can often be the key factor in a pet’s survival.

Our ICU is managed by Veterinary Criticalists, Dr Sarah Purcell and Dr Sureiyan Hardjo.
