There are many different health conditions that can require the expertise of a vet medicine specialist, with some of the most common including:

  • Gastrointestinal disorders: Conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), pancreatitis and chronic vomiting or diarrhoea could require advanced diagnostics and specialised treatments to manage symptoms and improve your pet’s quality of life.

  • Heart disease: Pets dealing with issues like heart murmurs or congestive heart failure should see a specialist for more in-depth treatment options, such as medication management or surgical interventions.

  • Respiratory issues: Chronic respiratory problems, including asthma and bronchitis, can affect your pet’s breathing and overall health. Specific types of care, such as oxygen therapy and bronchoscopy, are available.

  • Kidney and liver disease: Chronic kidney and liver diseases generally need ongoing medical management. This can include everything from special diets and medications to regular monitoring to slow the disease’s progression.

During an appointment with one of our internal medicine veterinarians, your pet will undergo a thorough evaluation to diagnose and manage their condition. Here’s what you can generally expect:

  1. Initial consultation: A veterinarian will review your pet’s medical history and perform a physical examination. This could involve blood tests, imaging or other diagnostic tools to fully assess the state of your pet’s health.

  2. Diagnostic testing: Depending on the findings, your pet might need to undergo additional testing (e.g. ultrasound, endoscopy, biopsy) to identify the underlying issue.

  3. Treatment plan: Based on the diagnosis, your specialist will develop a treatment plan tailored to your pet’s needs. The plan will depend on your pet’s condition, and it may include medications, dietary changes, and referrals to other specialists.

  4. Follow-up care: Chronic conditions tend to require ongoing management, so follow-up appointments will be booked to monitor your pet’s progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.
