Physiotherapy for animals

Offered as part of our holistic veterinary services, physiotherapy is helpful for pets recovering from surgery or managing chronic conditions. It can assist in restoring their mobility and improving strength while boosting their overall quality of life. The AREN Network provides a number of animal physiotherapy services that can support your pet through rehabilitation and recovery.

We take pride in our specialty services

Veterinary physiotherapy is the practice of using noninvasive, manual therapies to help pets regain mobility and function. Several different treatments are involved, including massage, therapeutic exercises, hydrotherapy and the use of equipment like treadmills or laser therapy. Our veterinary physiotherapists have the ability to meet the specific needs of your pet and will develop custom treatment plans that address their individual conditions.

Our veterinary physiotherapists also work closely with other veterinary specialists to ensure a comprehensive care plan for your pet. Whether your dog is recovering from orthopaedic surgery or your cat suffers from arthritis, our team is committed to improving their mobility and reducing pain through targeted physiotherapy treatments.

MAKE A REFERRAL

There are several situations in which a pet might benefit from physiotherapy, including:

  • Post-surgical rehabilitation: Pets who have been through surgery, particularly orthopaedic procedures, may need physiotherapy to regain strength and movement in the affected area.
  • Chronic pain management: Conditions like arthritis, hip dysplasia and intervertebral disc disease can cause chronic pain and limit your pet’s mobility. Physiotherapy helps to manage pain and improve function.
  • Mobility in senior pets: Older pets often experience decreased mobility due to conditions like arthritis or muscle weakness. Regular physiotherapy sessions can help them maintain mobility and improve their quality of life.
  • Neurological conditions: Pets with neurological conditions, such as spinal injuries or nerve damage, can benefit from physiotherapy to help restore motor function and coordination.
  • Weight management: Overweight pets are at higher risk for joint problems and poor mobility. Physiotherapy can be part of a broader weight management plan, helping to improve muscle strength and return them to a healthier weight.
MAKE A REFERRAL

The AREN Network’s animal physiotherapists deliver effective, non-invasive treatments that can help improve your pet’s mobility and overall well-being. Some common pet physiotherapy services include:

  • Manual therapy: Hands-on techniques like massage, joint mobilisation and stretching to reduce pain and improve flexibility.
  • Therapeutic exercises: Custom-designed exercise programs that can strengthen your pet’s muscles, improve their coordination and boost their overall mobility. These exercises can include balance training, walking on treadmills or using other equipment.
  • Hydrotherapy: Water therapy is very beneficial for pets with joint and mobility issues. The buoyancy of the water lessens the pressure on their joints, which allows for low-impact exercise that helps strengthen muscles and improve movement.
  • Laser therapy: Cold laser therapy can reduce inflammation and pain, promote tissue repair and speed up the healing process.
  • Electrotherapy: This treatment uses electrical currents to stimulate muscles and nerves, with the aim of improving your pet’s muscle function and reducing pain.

Our veterinary physiotherapy services are available at two of our AREN Network clinics: ARH Canberra. These locations are equipped with the latest physiotherapy tools and technologies to ensure your pet receives the highest quality care.

MAKE A REFERRAL

When you take your pet to a physiotherapy appointment at AREN, you can expect a thorough and compassionate approach to their care. Here’s what typically happens during an appointment:

  1. Your veterinary physiotherapist will carry out an assessment of your pet’s condition, including a physical examination and review of their medical history. This will assist them in identifying the specific areas that need treatment.
  2. Based on the assessment, your physiotherapist will write a treatment plan that could include anything from manual therapy and exercises to other modalities like laser or hydrotherapy.
  3. During the therapy session, your pet will be guided through different exercises and treatments that will hopefully improve their mobility and relieve pain. Each session is monitored to ensure your pet’s safety and comfort are always at optimal levels.
  4. Depending on your pet’s condition, you might need to bring them in for multiple sessions to achieve the best results. Your physiotherapist will teach you about how to continue certain exercises at home and monitor your pet’s progress through follow-up appointments.

The AREN Network is here for all your pet’s physiotherapy needs, helping to ensure they always receive the best possible care from trained professionals who can help them live a healthier, more active lifestyle.
